Contest Information

Please read the Official Rules for complete eligibility and entry information.

Eligibility

All authors of the entry are unpublished and not contracted in novel-length fiction (over 40,000 words) within the last 3 years from July 30, 2016. Self-published authors will be considered eligible to enter the Gateway contest with any unpublished work. MORWA will consider any work available for purchase online or in print at any time to be published and ineligible

Categories

The Gateway accepts entries for the following categories:

  • Single Title/Contemporary Series
     

  • Historical
     

  • Paranormal/Fantasy/Futuristic/Time Travel/Alternate Reality
     

  • Women's Fiction with strong romantic elements
     

  • Romantic Suspense
     

  • Young or New Adult

Final Judges

The final judges for each category are:

  • Single Title/Contemporary Series - Diana Steger, Editor, Evernight Publishing
  • Historical - Kathryn Cheshire, Editor, Historical Team, Mills Boon/Harlequin
  • Women's Fiction with strong romantic elements - Kristin Schwartz, Editor,  Berkley
  • Paranormal - TBA
  • Romantic Suspense - TBA
  • Young or New Adult - Megah Parekh, Editor, Grand Central Publishing

Deadlines

Contest opens for entries:  August 1, 2016

Entry Deadline:  Entry must be RECEIVED not later than midnight CDT,  September 9, 2016. 

Grand Prize and First Round Finalists Announced on/about:  October 31, 2016

Final Winners Announced on/about:  November 30, 2016

Judging Criteria

Each entry will be judged by three experienced judges with the lowest of the three scores dropped from the final tabulations.  Judges will be encouraged to write comments on both the score sheet and manuscript.

Prizes

GRAND PRIZE:

The Grand Prize winner will receive a 2-hour coaching session with writing coach Michael Hauge, valued at $700.  The Grand Prize is calculated as the entry receiving the highest mathematical score.  The Grand Prize winner will also receive the Gateway Charm.

First, second, and third places are awarded in each category. 

First place winners will receive:

  • A certificate of accomplishment
  • A one-year membership to MoRWA (e-newsletter option only)

Second place winners will receive:

  • A certificate of accomplishment
  • A one-year membership to MoRWA (e-newsletter option only)

Third place winners will receive:

  • A certificate of accomplishment

Submission Package

The Gateway to the Best Contest is an electronic format only contest.  Please read the official rules prior to completing the submission process.

Manuscripts must be in Word .doc or docx, or standard .rtf (rich text format) only.  We will reject entries that do not conform to one of these formats.
